S. Sant Singh Rais, in the memory of his son S. Sukha Singh who had died in 1893, bequeathed his entire property to provide free education to the children of less privileged population. It was envisioned as a school that would provide education to meet the needs of the times without distinction of caste, creed and religion. It was shifted to Rose Villa on The Mall in 1937 and raised to the Matriculation level in 1944, Higher Secondary level in 1958 and Senior Secondary level in 1986.
